Match reports - Romford /Old Albanians/ Stevenage - Festival - 18th Oct 2009. Last Sunday, 18th, was our biggest home fixture so far this season with one of the county's strongest clubs visiting us along with a new club that we knew little about? Old Albanians brought under 6s, 7s and 8s, and Romford and Gidea Park brought just the under 8s. Some joint training at each age group, assisted by some very willing and enthusiastic coaches from OAs ensured that all the children were involved from the outset. What a try fest for the under 7s! Although OAs eventually ran out winners 16-8 (which is the same as 2-1 when you think about it) in the under 7s match, the game was closer than the score line suggested. Once more we showed how well we work as a team with excellent tagging and energy applied to defence, and with each try scored being a team as opposed to a solo effort. Try scorers were Alex (3), Edward (3) and Tia (2). Under 6s (last week's 'mean and menacing mice') showed tremendous grit and fighting spirit as they ground out a 2-2 draw with their OAs counterparts - can't wait to see them in action as they move up the age groups! Try scorers were Jack F and Dominic. Player of the week was Danielle for some excellent support play. Sunday coming, 25th, and the week after, 1st November, we have training at home, start at 10.30 so no match report for a couple of weeks. It was nice to see some new faces this week and we certainly put on a great demonstration of mini tag rugby for them-the squad grows bigger and the rugby is great to watch. It was nice to see boys and girls in their new shirts for the first time even if the rain did it's best to put a dampener on it! Great support again from parents and helpers, thanks very much.
Match reports - Tabard / Chess Valley / Stevenage - Festival - 11th Oct 2009. Tabard and Chess Valley little 'uns battle Stevenage Mean and Menacing Mice in 3 - 3 thriller! Well, who would've thought it? The smallest and youngest of our club showed what a great grasp they already have of the game and their energy, determination and enthusiasm in this, their first competitive match, was the stuff of legend. After cries of "Tag! Pass! Go forward! Yes, forward! Not that forward, the other forward!" the team finally came back from an initial 2 - 1 deficit to lead 3 - 2, only to have victory scuppered by a late equalising try from the opposition. Honours even was a fair result for this competitive tag taster which ensured that everyone from both sides came away feeling pleased with themselves. Try scorers: Ryan S, Ryan T and Jack F. Stevenage under 7s snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in tantalising 5 - 4 contest against Chess Valley! This game was dificult to follow and was extremely laid back; a reflection of the, shall we say 'relaxed control', of the match referee who was able to spot everything that went on in the game from a patrol area six feet either side of the half-way cone. I must remember that this is rugby and in rugby we do not criticise the referee so I shan't do that - jolly well done sir! Needless to say we were rather unlucky in this game as we were clearly the stronger side and could well have accelerated past Chess Valley at the end with some more of our late tries - Oh! were it not for the touch line which leaped out on numerous occasions to catch our players' feet, thus causing us to loose valuable possession. Try scorers: Ryan T, Alex, Tia and Jack R. Tabard get the nod against emerging Stevenage under 7s in close 6 - 4 encounter! A pre-match briefing of "avoid stepping into touch at all costs" seemed to go unheeded as some fine attacking play was thwarted time and again by that perishing touch line! Tabard proved themselves to be a strong side, punishing every turn-over ball (when you give away possession) with a try. Mind you, wasn't sure who the Tabard coach was referring to when he called out "watch out for the big lad" - I wasn't playing as I recall. Needless to say, when we got the ball and went forward we showed ourselves to have the makings of a very strong team - some superb support play to the ball carrier saw a number of successful forced passes near the try line converted into tries. Great team work! Yet again we also demonstrated what a good tagging team we are, as, in the last 3 or 4 minutes, we held a concerted opposition attack at bay with tag after tag. Interestingly the Tabard coach, the referee from the last game, suddenly remembered the rules for this game! Try scorers: Alex (3), Jack R. Player of the week was tagger supreme - Edward. Next week we are at home to Romford and Gidea Park with still an outside chance of a game against Old Albanians - both teams will bring under 6s with them. Please arrive by 10.15 so we can get warmed up for a 10.30 start. Come on Stevenage!!
