GO Outdoors Y3PYORKSHIRE 3 PEAKS CHALLENGE Supported by GO OUTDOORS The UK’s Biggest Outdoor Stores!
Dear All - some musings on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge,
We came, we saw, we conked out ... at least that's how it felt after 25 miles of brutal, knee popping, lung bursting, thigh chaffing route march across Yaaarksher. We have a team time of 10 hours 49 minutes to our credit and a hatful of memories and campagne moments - there is the one about 'le stickee toffeeee puddink' (you had to be there).
The three peaks of 'Pen-Y-Ghent' (or penny can't), wasted 'Whernside' and the killer 'Ingleborough' took their toll on our meandering madmen who woke this morning, no doubt, with leg muscles like knotted handkerchiefs and blisters like Tesco value chicken fillets (huge and full of water).
There are three lasting lessons to be learnt from this event: The first is that directional finger posts in the Yorkshire Dales that tell you that there are only 3 miles to go are lying; The second is that when Jeff Boxer sends you an email starting with the words 'do you fancy ...' then you should consign it to spam without reading further; and the last is that the words 'I know a short cut' generally mean 'let me take you on a climb up an 80 metre vertical cliff without ropes and equipment'.
Seriously though, a great big thanks to all of you that supported this event by sponsoring the chaps - we reckon we have raised well over £2,000 for the mini and youth sections of the rugby club and that is not bad at all (final figure subject to collection and count up).
Now, what to do about next year ...
Thanks again,
Jeff, Gary, Huw, Rob, Steve, Paul, Mark, Stephen, Tom and driver John.

The Challenge
On Saturday 26th March, a brave team of intrepid footpads will be embarking on a vicious, cruel trek across the inhospitable wastes of the Yorkshire Dales ... well, at least until they reach the nearest café that is. Jeff Boxer, Gary Pemberton, Mark Woodward, Huw Brown, Steve Lant, Paul Lambe, Rob King, Stephen Outram and Tom McGrath – will attempt the famous Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge (Y3P).
The Y3P Challenge involves the walk / climb of the 3 highest mountains in the Yorkshire Dales; Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough one after the other; a total horizontal distance of 21¾ miles (35 km) and a vertical ascent / descent of 5,150 ft (1570 m) or almost a mile up & down, up & down, up & down ... and all within 12 hours start to finish!
Why on earth would they want to put themselves through this torture – and in the cold and wet of a Yorkshire Spring as well? - Partly for the challenge, and the crack of course, but also to raise funds for the Youth and Mini section of Stevenage Town Rugby Club. STRFC provides weekend sport for children of every age group from under 6 to under 12, and four age groups between 13 and 18.
Of course, this is not a grand children’s charity doing wonderful works solely on the contributions of others, but any money raised by this walk will help the club to raise funds to provide all sorts of sporting and healthy living benefits for its younger members as well as contributing towards the costs of taking the children away to a rugby tournament on the Isle of Wight in April. Ultimately, it will help us to ‘grow’ children into this marvellous sport that we all love. Thank you very much indeed for your donation.!
